Musée International de la Réforme signs contract with Refo500

11-09-2010

The famous Musée international de la Réforme of Geneva has become a project partner of Refo500. Mrs. Isabelle Graesslé, director of the Museum, signed today the contract with Refo500 Foundation today.

The Genevan Museum has quite a reputation in the field of Reformation history and was awarded various prices over the recent years. Meanwhile it has much experience in presenting historical content in a fresh and unconventional manner to a broad audience which makes the Museum a very attractive partner for Refo500. An example of this approach was the widely recognized exhibition ‘A day in the life of Calvin’ in 2009, with 3D-animations of the Swiss-French reformator. The exhibition was copied and adapted for the Netherlands, where it also became a success. Refo500, an international project in which many partners in Europe and the USA cooperate, wants to make the connection between the present and the past, demonstrating the continuing relevance of the Reformation.

Mrs. Graesslé about her expectations of collaborating with many partners in Refo500:
‘Since the opening of our Museum, in 2005, we want to present the heritage of the Reformation not just as a religious movement but also as a cultural, social and economical strength which has influenced the European identity through its history until now!. Therefore, to be part of Refo500 constitutes a chance and a challenge: a chance for networking with other Protestant cultural institutions and a challenging goal of walking to 2017 with relevant museological steps! We look forward to all the opportunities for strengthening this goal through Refo500!’

Dr. Herman Selderhuis, director of Refo500, says that ‘visiting the MIR is already exciting, but MIR joining Refo500 makes it even better. Now that more museums take part in Refo500, we have better possibilities to make the Reformation visible’.
