Calvin work found in Geneva
03-11-2010
Dr. Erik de Boer, Chairman of the Board of Refo500 Foundation, made a discovery in the archives of Geneva. He found ten accounts of the exegesis of John Calvin in the last year of his life. The manuscript was archived in the wrong place for a long time and therefore escaped attention.
The texts found come from a exegetical series of the book of Joshua from June 1563 to January 1564. The preachers came together for a weekly bible study called congregations. A stenographer in the service employed by diaconate took notes and later presented a written report.
There was already another volume known about Joshua, written in the ornate style of the period. The new found part contains ten of the original documents, which breaks the series at Joshua 22.
De Boer is placing the finishing touches on two books in which the accounts of the “prophecy” will be published and their development described. Regarding his discovery, De Boer says, “You [often] hear how in his last year of life Calvin prepared for death. Among the circle of his colleagues, he reviews God’s way with Moses and Joshua, on faithfulness in the work and in the changing of the guard.”
