The German Foundation of Luther Memorials has purchased a rare letter of the reformer Martin Luther. The letter from the year 1517 was discovered in a Swiss auction catalog.

It was reported by a spokesperson for the foundation in Wittenberg on Tuesday. The existence of the letter was until now unknown. The letter was presented in Wittenberg on May 4 and was attended by, among others, the minister of Cultural Affairss of the State of Saxony-Anhalt in Germany.

The letter is dated March 28, 1517 and is thus for the 95 theses for October 1517. The letter is addressed to Luther’s friend and brother of the order Johannes Lang (ca. 1487-1548), who was a professor at Wittenberg for several years. According to the Luther Foundation, this letter is the twelfth letter surviving among Luther’s letters from 1517. The other eleven letters are preserved in copies.

The letter is expected to be in an exhibition that is open to the general public at the Luther House Museum in Wittenberg, Germany.
