The logo shows two ways the name of the Refo500 project is viewed, namely in four blocks with letters, with Re and fo, as the full name Refo500. The name Refo refers to the Reformation and 500 refers to the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in the year 2017.

The many colors of the logo displays something of the variety of events, issues, individuals, churches, and developments that have played a role as a result of the Reformation. Moreover, the many colors refer to the versatility expected in the offerings within this project. The partners involved in the project are also multicolored.

The letters in the plane are zoomed in and magnified. This is what Refo500 does: zooms in on an event, theme, or aspect of the five hundred year history of the Reformation. When the letters are put together, the individual syllables Re and fo are understood as rewind and forward: looking back and looking forward.
